A private, by invitation only, event to introduce the concept of a new superyacht marina to be built on the Caribbean island of St Kitts took place last week.

Superyacht owners and their guests were invited to attend the exclusive event held in St Kitts following the end of the Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting, the Caribbean's premier superyacht event.

A star-studded cast of internationally famous musicians played at the celebration party, which saw Christophe Harbour introduce superyacht berths for sale at $2.5m each. A total of 12 berths starting at 60m (197ft) went on sale along with others of 68m (223ft) and 73m (240ft) with prices at US$10,000 per foot (US$3,668 per metre) in a marina that will also feature a further 288 berths for transient yachts ranging in size from 175m (574ft) down to just 25m (82ft).

Randy Shelton, director of sales special projects with developers, Kiawah Development Partners, told IBI that he is confident that he will have deposits on six large berths before the end of the first week of sales with strong interest in the remaining six berths that are available.

To create the marina, the developers will blast and dredge a channel from the sea in Whitehouse Bay into the caldera of an extinct volcano where the controlling draught will be 5.4m (18ft). Touring the site with IBI, Shelton told of the developer's plans to create a 300-acre harbour village and marina accommodating 2,000 residential properties on land being sold to potential homeowners at $5m an acre.

The plan is to complete the marina inside the next three years together with two adjacent hotels and a golf course. The high-end luxury resort and golf course will then be completed over a 10-year construction programme.
